本目標は、すべてのステークホルダーに対してBATグループ戦略である「A Better Tomorrow(TM)（より良い明日）」を構築するサステナビリティ施策の最新事例

【10月15日ロンドン】 – ブリティッシュ・アメリカン・タバコ(以下、BAT)は本日、世界気候アクションの日（Climate Action Day）に応じて、国連主導のグローバルキャンペーン「Race to Zero（レース・トゥ・ゼロ）**」（https://racetozero.unfccc.int/join-the-race/）に加盟し、2050年までにネットゼロ・エミッション達成を目指すことを発表しました。

世界の平均気温の上昇を産業革命以前の水準から1.5℃未満に抑えるには、大規模で広範なアクションが求められており、企業も重要な役割を担っています。BATはその実現に向けて、従来からのサステナビリティに関する目標を改めて見直し、遅くとも2050年までに、バリューチェーン全体で温室効果ガス排出量の実質ゼロを実現することを目指します。

BATの今回の発表は、10月に開催されるG20サミット（https://www.g20.org/）や11月に英国グラスゴーで開催される国連気候変動枠組条約締約国（COP26）会議（https://ukcop26.org/）を始め、気候変動対策における世界の重要なマイルストーンに先駆けて行われたものです。BATの最高マーケティング責任者（CMO）、キングスリー・ウィートンは次のように述べています。「当社は『A Better Tomorrow（より良い明日）』を築くという目標を掲げ、あらゆる活動の中心に持続可能性を据えており、この度、温室効果ガス排出量実質ゼロを目指すRace to Zeroキャンペーンを支援できることを光栄に思います。これに加えて、BATはVuse、glo(TM)、VELO等の新カテゴリー製品の開発に取り組むことで、2025年までに非燃焼性たばこ製品を利用する消費者を3,000万人へ増やし、新カテゴリー製品の売上50億ポンドを達成するという意欲的な独自目標も設定しています。」

持続可能な目標の実現に関するBATの直近の取り組み以下の通りです。

2020年における自社の事業活動による二酸化炭素排出量についてBATはグループ全体で、昨対比30.9%、対2017年比37.4%の削減を達成

Race to Zeroについて
Race to Zeroは、温室効果ガス排出量を2030年までに半減、2050年までに実質ゼロの実現を目指す、UNFCCC（国連気候変動枠組条約）が主導し「Climate Ambition Alliance（気候野心同盟）」が展開するグローバルキャンペーンです。このキャンペーンに参加する4,000社以上の企業で世界の二酸化炭素排出量の25%近くをカバーし、世界のGDPの50%以上を占めています。

*科学的根拠に基づく目標（SBT）は、地球温暖化を産業革命以前のレベルから1.5℃未満に抑えるために必要な削減量でなければなりません。BATはすでに、気温上昇を2℃未満に抑えるという科学的根拠に基づく目標に沿って2030年までに自社の事業全体、2050年までにバリューチェーン全体でカーボンニュートラルを実現するというSBTを設定しています。今後、この目標を1.5℃未満の気温上昇に抑えるために、再度、設定し直し、ネットゼロの基準および定義に対応していきます。
